Newspapers have an enormous influence on people’s opinions. Why is it the case? Do you think it is a positive or negative situation? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

01

Even though gradually being eclipsed by TV, radio, and more recently the Internet, newspapers are still the dominant source of information for most people, especially in the political and business landscape, and likely to remain in that position for some time to come. This is mainly because newspapers are traditionally thought of as the most serious news channel compared with TV, radio, and the Internet, which are often treated as media of entertainment. Newspapers are generally believed to supply more reliable and balanced information on which many readers form opinions. In a wider mass media system, nothing can beat newspapers in shaping the desires, wants, and thinking of the majority of people. That is why anybody who says that they can predict the death of print journalism may be either a liar or a fool.

The impact of newspapers on public opinion could be good, bad or somewhere in between. To begin with, effects are not the same from one country to the next, or even from one person to the next. The good part is that, since newspapers exercise so vast a power, and the great body of readers take the print stuff seriously, so the influence goes a long way. The bad part is that a number of newspapers are biased due to pressure from owners and investors who intend to make more and more money, which is likely to threaten the independence of some newspapers. In this case, much of what appears in the editorials and comments might be propaganda in politics and businesses.

(2) Impact

(3) Somewhere in between 介于两者之间

(4) Exercise vast power on...

(5) Take...seriously

(6) Threaten 威胁

(7) Propaganda 宣传

To sum up, the role newspapers play in the modern society is unique when it comes to having the power to influence people’s opinions. To what extent that influence is positive or negative may depend on whether a newspaper is independent or biased.

(Survey)

(Write a general question)

(Write questions to guide your reading)

(Read to answer the questions)

(Underline words that answer the question)

(Revise the questions)

(Use examples)

1. If there is no information on this.

2. If it is impossible to say what the writer thinks about it.

Not Given

Beacons and flashing lights are still used by ATC today.

As early as the 1920s, the earliest air traffic controllers manually guided aircraft in the vicinity of the airports, using lights and flags, while beacons and flashing lights were placed along cross-country routes to establish the earliest airways. However, this purely visual system was useless in bad weather, and, by the 1930s, radio communication was coming into use for ATC.
